Be My Little Baby

A week of Seattle love found at the Preservation Pub.

Meet Matt and Mike. Mike (left) Matt (right) sandwiched between my room mate Katy & myself. One random summer night, early June 2008, we ran into these two boys at a show after Sundown in the City at the Preservation Pub on Market Square. We began to chat with them and discovered they were from Seattle, on a road trip. We were at Town Mountain, which is for the most part a bluegrass band. I'll never forget the moment when Matt looked right at me in wonder and said, "I've never been to a hoedown before."

They ended up staying at a friends house for the evening, we were a little sketchy about letting these 2 dudes come stay at our house so soon. But we ended up talking to them later, and met up at Kari's 21st birthday party a couple of days later (above). This is when I discovered Mike's massive amount of records he was toting along with him across the country, and his record player, which just happened to be the same as mine.
It was love ever since. They stayed with us for the rest of the week, and it was a week filled with guitars, keyboards, Velvet Underground, Big Bill Broonzy, home cooked meals by chef Matt and of course some Motown. They opened up/enforced a whole different musical aspect for me.../freedom of meeting & loving new people.
The crew even went with me to my interview at Party City--ha! What a nightmare that job was.
Haley, Mike, & Matt at Liz's 22nd birthday party. Everyone called them the "Seattle boys".
Mike with the records. They would wake us up in the mornings and we would play Nintendo & drink coffee & spin countless records. We laughed. We danced. We took millions of pictures. We didn't want them to go home. Here's we are the day Matt & Mike left to head back to Seattle. We were sad. Our house felt empty after they left. Its weird how much you can bond with a couple of people just over a few days time. It shows how many people are out there that you're meant to be friends with---even just 2 boys from Seattle we picked up randomly at a bar. We still keep in touch, talk of us visiting Seattle and them taking us to the most badass record store on earth (or so I hear...). We even talk about the same things we talked about when they were here in Knoxville---us 4 all moving in together & getting a loft (who said we can't dream right?) They drove away this day, with a driving kit we made them, numerous Knoxville stickers on their car, a lot of new t-shirts, a whole lot of new friends and a better understanding of the south, and left behind a couple of Katieys that will never forget them!

---Gulf Shores, Alabama---

Late May 2009, pretty immediately after finals, my room mate Katy & myself packed up and headed to Gulf Shores with the fam. After having many financial issues this year..we were lucky enough to use our family in Alabama's condo.
The two little people down there....those are my parents :)
Lemon juice=natural highlights...or so I believe
Beautiful Gulf Shores State Park...we did lots of cruising through here.
Rose I bought my mom for Mother's Day...yeah I know I'm sweet.
The condos...Yankee Hotel Foxtrot style..at least that is what it reminded me of. Maybe I just had Wilco on the mind.
Overall, a great relaxing trip. One of the only times I was able to get away this summer besides Bonnaroo. Looovee the beach.

June Summer Family Visit In Nashville

From Southern Louisiana, to Denver, Colorado, & back to Knoxville, TN, The Cauthen side of the family doesn't get to see each other too much now that all the kids have up and moved away. This is a random early June one-night gathering in Nashville---the first time seeing my cousin Natalie in over 2 years, and finally meeting her brand new baby boy, Baron. I also got to meet my cousin Jenny's baby girl, Caroline, for the first time. And catch up with 3-year-old Sammy, though I think he may have been more scared of me than happy to see me. Unfortunately my Mom was under the weather when we went, so it was just my Dad, Dowe, and myself. Could only stay one day because I had to work for the first time ever ( I think..) at Stir Fry the next evening. Anyway, it was good, always good to see the fam.

Group Shot--Left to right from top--Anna, Jenny (Sam unfortunately hidden behind Natalie), Natalie with Baron, Annelle, Carol, Alana with Caroline, Hunter, In front--Drew, Dad, Dowe........me
The Siblings--My Dad with Annelle and Carol
Baby Baron
Me & Caroline
Uncle Hunter with Sammy & Caroline
Sam & Caroline

Catching Up. Top 10 Records of 2008. Two months away from 2010.

Figures huh? I was so indecisive I never posted my top 10. But after finding some notes with some scribbling, I decided to post what it seems like the general consensus was....last year (2008).

1. Fleet Foxes----------------------Fleet Foxes
2. Department of Eagles---------In Ear Park
3. Tim O'Brien------------------- Chameleon
4. Beach House------------------ Devotion
5. Born Ruffians-----------------Red Yellow and Blue
6. Delta Spirit-------------------Ode to Sunshine
7. Deerhoof----------------------Offend Maggie
8. Wolf Parade------------------At Mount Zoomer
9. Of Montreal -----------------Skeletal Lamping
10.Bon Iver----------------------For Emma Forever Ago

Honorable favorites-
Deerhunter---------------------Microcastle
The Walkmen--------------You & Me
Blitzen Trapper----------------Furr
School of Seven Bells---------Alpinisms

It is very strange posting this ALMOST A YEAR later. I was tempted to move things around, to just plain take some things off. For example, at this point in time I would have definitely moved Deerhunter way up on the list. So would Bon Iver. But I had just discovered both those records towards the end of last year. So I tried to stay as true to the list I found as possible...and make it be what I was actually thinking at the end of 2008 rather than what I am thinking now. There are probably a few I forgot about too because the end of the list (8-10) look real sketchy to me. I'm going to be sure to be more timely for 2009's list....

JEM 200 Photography Word Project-"Fragile/Hot"

All of these photos were taken by yours truly in the Photojournalism class at UT last Fall (2008). Some of them I love, some of them not so much. In a way it was really challenging for me, because I take way too many pictures in the first place, it was always so hard to edit and pick the best shots for the project. I believe I am most pleased with the portraits of "Lincoln".
